There are around 250,000 deaths each year in California, which means millions of dollars are spent on funeral expenses. California has one of the higher cremation rates in the U.S., with over 50% of Californians chosing cremation as their preferred end-of-life funeral choice. This means that there are over 125,000 cremations performed in the state each year, far more than any other state.

With a struggling economy, and the first wave of baby boomers reaching retirement, our death care industry is now experiencing some major changes. There is a greater demand for more affordable funeral and cremation services. Many Californians do not want to spend more than they have to on funeral expenses, and so the option to have a direct cremation, has also gained popularity. This simply means having the deceased cremated upon death, with no service involved, and using a simple cardboard container for the cremation. The cremated remains are then usually returned to the family in a basic container. The family can opt to chose their own cremation urn if desired, and arrange their own memorial service or ash scattering. Before a cremation can be performed, California law requires for a ‘Declaration for Disposition of Cremated Remains form’ to be completed. You can complete this authorization form yourself if you are preplanning a cremation, or the next-of-kin will usually complete and sign this form when making arrangements following a death. The form can be downloaded here: http://www.cfb.ca.gov/consumer/1705form.pdf.
The county health department must then issue a Permit for Disposition of Human Remains for the cremation to proceed. Your cremation provider will usually obtain this permit as part of their service.

In some cities in California the rising interest in direct cremation has made the price for this service extremely competitive. The cost for a direct cremation still varies quite significantly depending upon which city in California you live. A direct cremation in the Bay area is likely to cost you $300 to $400 more than a basic direct cremation in the Greater Los Angeles area.

California is also one of the states where a licensed funeral operator can be licensed as a "Direct disposal establishment", which means that they do not operate a funeral home but are licensed to conduct direct dispositions. This means that they arrange direct cremations, although direct burials can also be conducted. These establishments will often just be a storefront, office or suite where you can visit to make arrangements and complete the necessary cremation permits. The direct disposal funeral operator will then collect the deceased, transport them directly to a crematory to conduct the cremation, and arrange for the cremated remains to be delivered back to you, or made available for collection.
